You’ve probably spent the past several months mostly indoors (hopefully in air conditioning!), but the temperatures in Houston are still rising — and the preferred way to cool down might be with a tasty cocktail. Luckily, Houston’s best bars and restaurants are still serving drinks, whether that means a specialty margarita, mojito, or rum punch.

For the taste of summer you’re craving, check out these 8 must-try bars and restaurants. Each one is a local, Black-owned business that stands ready to quench your thirst and serve you great takes on everything from classic comfort foods to revamped Southern favorites. These spots each make a perfect destination for those looking to spend their dining dollars more mindfully now, too.

Be sure to check each of these spots before you go, though, as the state continues to adapt to new guidelines and regulations in reopening; as of publication, Texas’ reopening plans were put on hold amid a surge of coronavirus cases. A number of Houston’s restaurants have resumed (or pared down) dine-in service, and this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit houstontx.gov. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
