Taco Tuesday is a beloved tradition in the San Francisco Bay Area. Of course, this summer we’re practicing social distancing instead of joining groups of friends at lively indoor cantinas for tacos and margaritas. But plenty of the region’s best restaurants are offering tacos to-go — as well as, in one of our favorite new innovations, margaritas to-go, featuring Tequila Cazadores. Read on for the best taco and tequila spots in the Bay Area — bottoms up! (And if you’re looking to make your own at-home cocktails, check out some of our favorite margarita recipes.)

Be sure to check these bars and restaurants before you go, as they continue to adapt to changing regulations.

Celia's by the Beach

No-frills, affordable, everything you want from a friendly neighborhood Cal-Mex spot — there’s a reason Celia’s popularity is enduring in San Francisco. Old-school favorites like hard-shell tacos with ground beef or shredded chicken are menu mainstays, as are enormous combo platters with rice and refried beans. Pair your meal with the spicy Smoking Hot Margarita, which includes Cazadores Blanco, jalapeno, and lime juice.

Alberto's Cantina

A cheery downtown Pleasanton restaurant with a menu of Mexican-American classics, Alberto’s makes almost its entire menu available for takeout, whether you’re a fan of the Baja-style fish tacos with beer-battered cod, pico de gallo, and housemade white sauce, or “Mexican tacos” of carne asada on soft corn tortillas. Of course, the night wouldn’t be complete without Alberto’s Cantina Margarita Mix, smartly packaged with ice, limes, and salt on the side; try it with Cazadores tequila.

Mission Rock Resort

For a city on a peninsula, San Francisco can be woefully short on waterfront dining, which is why this Mission Bay restaurant has had such appeal. But don’t worry: they nail takeout, too. From a diverse, seafood-heavy menu, fish tacos with cilantro slaw, pico de gallo, guacamole, and refried black beans are a highlight — particularly when paired with “The Marg,” a clean margarita with Cazadores Blanco tequila, fresh lime, and agave.

The Taco Shop at Underdogs

Part sports bar, part taqueria, this San Francisco hangout has made much of its menu available to-go. Beer-battered Baja-style fish tacos with roasted tomato and lime salsa are one of the menu’s hits; quirky “Nick’s Way” tacos — on a grilled corn tortilla that’s wrapped in a soft one, smothered in Monterey Jack and guacamole — are another. And it’s hard to resist the appeal of “Nachos es muy Grande,” piled with every topping imaginable.

Sunset Cantina

An Outer Sunset neighborhood favorite, this cantina is translating its magic to takeout with “Cantina To-Go” offerings. Must-orders include slow-roasted tacos al pastor with sour orange and pineapple; carnitas tacos with an irresistible salsa rojo; and beer-battered, Baja-style shrimp tacos with chipotle and avocado cremas. And to drink? You can’t go wrong with a bottle of margaritas, or a more original concoction like the Playa del Carmen, with vibrant housemade hibiscus syrup, Cazadores Reposado, and lime.

Underdogs Too

A Parkside spinoff of the Sunset original, Underdogs Too serves up many of the same favorites, including double-tortilla “Nick’s Way” tacos, stuffed with your choice of carne asada, carnitas, or housemade chorizo, and fresh shrimp tacos with pico de gallo, red onions, and tomatillo salsa. To pair with your meal, drink options include local beers, Cazadores tequila, and housemade agua fresca.

A Lower Haight staple known equally for cocktails and small plates, Maven is the kind of restaurant that was once a cozy date spot but now excels at translating the experience to-go. A can’t-miss order? Roasted cochinita pork tacos, with “Freddy’s black beans” and salsa verde, paired with a double portion of the Oxford Comma, with both mezcal and Cazadores tequila, turmeric, lime, Bonal, and ginger.

Zazil Cocina Mexicana

This upscale Santana Row hotspot draws culinary inspiration from all over Mexico, but among the true highlights are its tacos, including Ensenada-style tempura fish tacos with cabbage slaw, cilantro, and morita chile mayonnaise, and Ensenada-style vegetarian tacos, where tofu gets the same treatment.

Tia Margarita

The Richmond District adores this decades-old hangout for its freely flowing margaritas and huge, satisfying plates of California-Mex comfort food. Among the best orders: hard-shell Tacos Dorados with chicken or ground beef, crisp-fried taquitos with shredded beef and guacamole, and, naturally, margaritas to-go.

Chug Pub

While Chug Pub itself, as the name might suggest, is best known for plentiful beer, the taqueria within its walls, Casa Barajas, is all about the tacos. Mission-style tacos include crispy tinga pork, pan-fried garlic catfish, and grilled shrimp with avocado, while the ham-and-cheese taquitos are a clever spin on the usual ground beef.

Mas Taco Bar

With three Sacramento-area locations, Mas Taco is best known for out-of-the-box creations, especially where tacos are concerned. Think Indian butter chicken “tacos” in naan bread, Vietnamese pork tacos with sriracha and cilantro, or fried oyster tacos with Tapatio aioli. The margaritas are equally creative: for a to-go option, try the Cadillac margarita, with Cazadores Blanco, agave nectar, and fresh lime juice.
