The smartphone market calls to mind an old fable, David and Goliath. The goliaths dominate, of course — but there is one David that is coming out in front. In 2020 — a year of decline in OEM sales — and 2021, one brand remained a “challenger”: OnePlus. While most brands (including the premium ones) saw modest growth in the first half of 2021, OnePlus saw a whopping 428 percent YoY growth.

What’s the reason for OnePlus’ explosive popularity? Industry experts point to the need for choice in the smartphone market. While the prices of premium smartphones have risen, OnePlus’ devices (except for one) have remained under $1,000. And OnePlus’ David story comes with its own strengths. OnePlus appeals to its community and its users, holding events and product sessions, called OpenEar forums, to listen to users’ feedback.

The result? OnePlus smartphones are all about putting the user first. The OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 are made with gaming in mind, with a clean OS and Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 888 processors, and they come with a warp-speed charger, so a battery dying is the last thing on users’ minds. Check out a few more of the the OnePlus 9 Series’ user-first upgrades:

Warp 65 charging

Almost every smartphone owner can relate to that age-old problem of impatiently waiting while a battery charges. It can be torturously slow at times, and always seems to take longer while you need to be somewhere else. And sometimes, a smartphone maker can suddenly just decide not to include a charger in the box, period.

The OnePlus 9 Series Warp Charge technology makes those scenarios a thing of the past. The charger that comes in the box can be used universally across other devices, and users can get a full charge in 29 minutes — and enough for a full-day of use in just 15 minutes. The OnePlus 9 Pro uses a custom 4,500 mAh battery with an improved dual-cell design to reduce internal resistance and heat while it’s charging. That means the device can charge at a higher output for a longer time — and gives users their precious time back.

For wireless charging, there’s the Warp Charge 50 Wireless, OnePlus’ fastest-ever wireless charging technology. (Not to mention one of the fastest solutions in the industry.) Users get a full 1 to 100% charge in 43 minutes with the Warp Charge 50 Wireless, and because the charger has two coils, users can charge the OnePlus 9 Pro vertically or horizontally and get the same results.

8K Cameras

When a smartphone company collaborates with an iconic lensmaker like Hasselbad, you know they’re serious about the quality of their cameras. OnePlus wanted to work with Hasselbad because of the company’s incredible ability to capture colors in stunning clarity and detail. To do that, OnePlus and Hasselblad calibrated the camera sensors on the OnePlus 9 Series, and even lab-tested the phones using Hasselblad’s exacting color-proofing standards. They then collaborated on fine-tuning hundreds of real-life shots using computational photography — a field that combines everything from computer vision to digital processing — to find the perfect balance of color that satisfied users’ needs and habits. There’s even a Hasselblad Pro Mode, which gives users the power to adjust ISO, focus, exposure time, and white balance, among other things.

The result is a standard bearer for smartphone cameras. The OnePlus 9 Pro’s 48MP main camera features a custom-designed IMX789 sensor — co-created with Sony — with a 1/1.4” sensor, which gives users faster focus speeds, four times more color information for greater color accuracy, cleaner daytime and night shots, and reduced motion blur in videos. There’s also a 50MP ultra-wide camera on the OnePlus 9 Pro, which uses a unique Freeform Lens that corrects incoming light and reduces distortion at the edge of photos.

For mobile filmmakers, both phones in the OnePlus 9 series are able to shoot in 8K 30fps, while the OnePlus 9 Pro can capture video at 4K 120fps. Users can even shoot time-lapse videos while they’re walking.

Updated Display Performance and Gaming Experiences

Since 2019, OnePlus has helped define what a leading display experience really looks like. The OnePlus 7 Pro was the first commercially released phone with a 90Hz refresh rate on an OLED display. Now, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s Fluid Display 2.0 uses cutting-edge techniques and materials like low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology — the same tech used in high-end OLED displays — to give users stunning clarity and dazzling color. OnePlus has been consistently ranked high by DisplayMate, since the OnePlus 7 Pro. The OnePlus 9 Plus also received an A+ rating for its display performance.

That display also makes the OnePlus series a natural fit for gaming; the OnePlus 8 Series was the first mobile phone to support Fornite at 90 fps. The OnePlus 9 Series also has a lightning-fast touch response for gaming. The One Plus 9 Pro can automatically adjust the refresh rate from 120 Hz all the way down to 1 Hz based on the scenario. Hyper Touch technology also ratchets up the response time on certain games by increasing the syncing speed between the processor and display to a staggering 360 Hz. That means that users won’t miss a thing, wherever they happen to be gaming.

Clean, Updated Software

Bloatware may feel unavoidable with certain phones — but a pure Android experience isn’t impossible. OnePlus’ flagship series — the OnePlus 8 and 9 series — will receive three major Android updates (like the new Android 12 update) and four years of security support. The beta OxygenOS12 includes work, play, and rest modes for seamless transitions into your days — without the bloatware that plagues other phones. The OnePlus 9 Series is built for users who want the most out of their phone, giving them more of what they want and less of what they don’t.
