Tonight at 11! A revolutionary birth control called Phexxi® (lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate—1.8%, 1%, 0.4%) is sweeping the nation, offering users a hormone-free contraceptive — used only when they need it!

Ah, birth control. A staple in sexual health since the 1960s, when the pill was approved for contraceptive use. Since then, many breakthroughs in contemporary birth control products have created a path toward sexual autonomy. There are plenty of options out there, but many are just repackaged versions of the original mechanism of action. Whether it’s the pill, ring, patch, or implant, these birth controls still use the same hormones — just in different forms and dosages.

So when Phexxi hit the birth control market in 2020, it was a sea-change from the lot. The revolutionary contraceptive provided a way for vulva-owners to control pregnancy prevention — without the hormones and the side effects that some women may experience.

Phexxi is a hormone-free prescription vaginal gel used to prevent pregnancy, for those who choose to use an on-demand method of birth control. Once the applicator is inserted into the vagina (similar to a tampon), the user pushes the gel in and removes the applicator.

Phexxi works by maintaining the natural acidic environment of the vagina. When sperm enters the vagina, it raises the vagina’s pH level, which allows the sperm to swim up the reproductive canal. Phexxi contains active ingredients citric acid, lactic acid, and potassium bitartrate, which maintains the vaginal pH in the range of 3.5 to 4.5. This lowers sperm mobility and the chance of sperm reaching the egg, without impacting the user’s hormones or ovulation. For context, hormonal birth control like the Pill works by stopping ovulation through the intake of the hormones estrogen and progestin. By stopping ovulation, this means that there’s no egg present for the sperm to fertilize.

It’s the flexibility of Phexxi that makes it so appealing and ground-breaking. Consider new parents who would rather not take hormones while breastfeeding or people who want to live their lives free of synthetic hormones. Also, those with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, breast cancer, heart disease, severe diabetes, severe liver disease, a history of blood clots or a history of stroke aren’t eligible for hormones. Plus, not everyone wants to use birth control when they aren’t having sex.

Phexxi puts users in control of their birth control. While condoms are recommended to prevent the spread of STIs, Phexxi eliminates the need to rely on a partner to bring a condom or to head to the doctor’s office for an IUD, implant, or contraceptive injection. Phexxi is used in the moment, right before each and every act of sex. Once in the vagina, Phexxi works immediately and lasts up to an hour before each act of sex. No daily commitment required! Note: Phexxi is only effective when used immediately before (or up to 1 hour before) each act of vaginal sex — but not after vaginal sex.

In honor of Phexxi’s step into the birth control market, we at The Explainer Studio thought it deserved its own news segment. Watch our video above on how Phexxi works, why it’s revolutionary, and how it can put you in control of your sexual health.
