When a 6-year-old Sasha DiGiulian attended her older brother’s birthday party at a climbing gym, no one could have predicted the influence that day would have on her life. Not only is Sasha still climbing 22 years later, but she’s also a world champion with multiple first ascents and over 30 first female ascents under her belt.

DiGiulian’s climbing journey hasn’t always been easy, especially as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated sport. “I feel like when I got into climbing, there was an old school way of doing things,” she says, “and it certainly was out of the contract to wear makeup while climbing or paint your nails.” But rather than stick with the status quo, DiGiulian stayed true to who she is. “What I love about creating my own path in the sport is showing other women and other young girls and boys that you can be whoever you want to be and embrace all of the dimensions of what make you unique and hone into them, and live them, and don’t compromise,” she says.

Now, with her growing platform, DiGiulian wants to elevate the voices of women and girls in the outdoors through her production company, Female-Focused Adventures. “As I grew up in climbing and realized that there are so many other women who are so connected and passionate about the outdoors I was like, ‘Wow, I’m not the only one,’” she recalls. “There are so many badass women who often don’t even have their stories told.”

For DiGiulian, living life on her own terms means defining her own path, even in the face of challenge and uncertainty. “I could never have predicted the way that my life has been even the last year and the last decade,” she says. “I didn’t aspire to be a professional climber because I didn’t know what that meant. I just followed what I loved and committed myself to doing it. I’ve had major ups and I’ve had major downs, but what I feel like has been my guiding light has been staying true to who I am.”
