When it comes to live entertainment in Chicago, it’s hard to contend with The Chicago Theatre, one of the country’s first performance venues of its scale and caliber when it opened its doors in 1921 — feats so impressive, they landed it with a nickname of "The Wonder Theatre of the World.” Since then it’s been gathering Second City crowds on the weekly for a medley of A-list acts from the jazz age to contemporary headliners.
That commitment to world-class entertainment only gets better this year with the arrival of the Chase Lounge, a pre-show retreat situated in the venue’s lower lobby level that was designed to be in keeping with the distinct timeless décor, rich heritage, and opulent details of the building in which it resides. Complete with vintage Chicago memorabilia, electric guitars, Fender speakers, gramophones, and records spanning the works of legendary musicians, the lounge channels the spirit of the many zeitgeists the theatre has embraced over the century — from 1920s speakeasy and Vaudevillian Playhouse, to well-worn rock and roll hangout.
Local chef Paul Kahan will be helming the menu in the Chase Lounge through September with highlights from the Publican brand, including complimentary gastropub-inspired eats like charcuterie and smoked salmon with celery relish, dill, and sesame bread. Pair up those plates at the cash bar, where a fleet of wine, beer, and top shelf spirits. A well-staffed bar means service is lightning fast, helping you to bypass lengthy intermission lines and make it to your seat in time with a carefully crafted cocktail of your choosing.
The lounge opens for select shows as soon as theatre doors do and serves guests through opening acts, making it easy to venture in and out for bites and sips while discovering the grandeur of the theatre before and between sets. And though you likely won’t want to miss a millisecond of the theatre’s upcoming bookings (think Mary J. Blige, Chris Rock, and Lyle Lovett and His Large Band), it’ll be easy to linger in these thoughtfully outfitted environs, thanks to low-hanging Edison bulb lighting, four rows of high-backed leather sofas and oversized chairs, and an attentive wait staff.
Between just 100 lounge seats and a summer-to-fall lineup of unmissable performers, it’s best to book your spot soon. Chase credit and debit card holders can do so by purchasing a Chase Preferred Seat for select shows, at which point they will receive an invitation closer to the event date to make a reservation for exclusive entry to the Chase Lounge before the show. From there, it’s time to relax, unwind, and take in the sounds, sights, and ambiance of this historic Chicago landmark.
